xxxHOLiC 162 translation

watanuki
Bribed one of my friends with a Snickers to buy the magazine for me. Yay.

[01]
The memories of the heart are important, but

The memories of the body are very important too.
[T/N: As usual, "body" is written with a character that can also mean "corpse."]

[02]
Guest: Nice to meet you.

I'm sorry for coming so suddenly.

I heard that it was all right to come here if one has a wish...

FX: Smooth

Yuuko: It's fine.

That you entered this shop
Means that you have a wish.

[03]
Guest: Yes,

That's right.

Watanuki: Somehow this development is like old times.

Yuuko: Your wish is?

Guest: Actually...

Watanuki: I wonder what kind of wish it is.

She seems like a good person from her smile, but
A lot of the guests who come to this shop are people with eccentric wishes.

[04]
Guest: I want to learn cooking.

Watanuki: THAT QUIET A WISH!?

FX: Dejected

Yuuko: You move weird. Looks like that'll overflow.

FX: Woah woah woah

Watanuki: Sorry!

Yuuko: ...A price is needed.

[05]
Guest: Of course I'll pay for the instruction fees.

Watanuki: Does that mean Yuuko-san is going to teach cooking!?

What could Yuuko-san's cooking be!!

It's no good! I'm too afraid, I can't imagine!

Yuuko: Understood.

I shall grant that wish.

[06]
Yuuko: Watanuki will.

Watanuki: I KNEW IT!

FX: Flustered

Yuuko: Mm~ Delicious.

Watanuki: Sheesh, making me take on cooking lessons without apology--

FX: Fuming

[07]
Yuuko: Oh, what's wrong with it?

Kohane-chan learned from you and became as good as this.

Mokona: Yeah, it's really tasty.
Kohane's amazing!

FX: Rolling

Watanuki: That's true.

Kohane-chan really gave it her all.

FX: Happy sigh

Yuuko: Then that girl will be your second pupil, Watanuki.

Watanuki: But

I'm sure going to the house of a person I don't know at all will be--

[08]
Yuuko: Watanuki, we're out of sa~ke!

FX: Ta

Mokona: Bring hot brown rice sake too~!
Bring about ten bottles.

FX: Ta-da

Doumeki: Make more of this deep-fried tofu.

FX: TA DA DUM

Watanuki: NOT ONE PERSON WILL LISTEN TO ME!!

[09]
{in the dreamworld}
Watanuki: Good evening, Haruka-san.

[10]
Haruka: My my.

Seems you're not surprised any more.

Watanuki: I've gotten used to expecting it somehow.

Haruka: ...Seem what you've become used to isn't just meeting me.

You really have changed.

And you're moving forward properly.

Watanuki: Moving forward?

[11]
Haruka: There are two kinds of change.
To move forward and to retreat.

Which is good and which is bad I can't say, but
It seems that for you what was necessary was to move forward.

You've become involved with various people, and you're continuing to move forward.
Particularly with that person's strong feelings.

[12]
Watanuki: ...Yuuko-san, eh.

Haruka: And, with each step
You're being made to move along a large path.

So that you can choose properly, rather than be forced.

[13]
Watanuki: A large path...

Haruka: It's all right if you don't understand.

Choices are always being made.
But, people don't really notice that.

[14]
Haruka: Afterward at that time, you chose this yourself.
Since you know that the result of the choice is now. ["Know" is written "recognize," and "now" is written "existence."]

Watanuki: ...Yes.

Haruka: Now then.

Since we've been able to meet at last, is there nothing interesting to talk about?

Slightly amended, 8/6/08.

I noticed this time around that Mokona uses stereotypical masculine particles. Not really surprising considering that Mokona has a boyish voice in the xxxHOLiC anime.

Slightly O/T: I realized while looking over my translation of Clover that in some ways Kohane reminds me of Suu.

Tune in next time (in two weeks).

I agree with you about the "iru" thing. Thanks for pointing that out and when it comes to Ohkawa, everything is suspect xD A living price would be something interesting and new xD

About Mokona, yeah, CLAMP has said in the internet radio that black mokona is a boy while the white mokona is a girl ^^

Watanuki is soo becoming the next "Yuuko" as a wish granter xD

Well, that would explain it. Though I don't get terribly girl-ish vibes from the white Mokona...just less boy-ish ones.

Yeah, the "iru" thing. We'll see what comes of it.

With the reminder below from the anonymous reader in Germany, I have to retract the statement about "iru" meaning "is" for living things; it's "iru" as in "to be needed." Gomen!

How cool would it be if this new client was Doumeki's mother? CLAMP did say in an interview that his mather is alive, right? maybe she wants to learn how to cook bacause Doumeki starves at home without watanuki's food ahuahuahuahuahuhauhuauha

Thanks for translation.

The drama CDs say somewhere that White mokona is feminine and black mokona is masculine.

Is it just me or is Watanuki going forward to meet his destiny as a cooking teacher?

About the "iru" thing
To me the "iru" doesn't seem strange at all. What is the exact sentence? Is it "Taika ha iru"?
In case the 'iru' is used as in something being "needed"
(iru 要る= hitsuyou de aru 必要である).

Another example for this use of iru would be this:
(It just started raining outside.)
A: "kasa iru?" (do you need an umbrella?)
B: "iru!"(yes![I need one.]) or "iranai" (I don't want/ need one.).

Thanks so much for the translations... though the 'calm before the storm' vibe in these past few chapters is really starting to make me anxious. Heh, I wonder what Watanuki will gain from this experience...

I've been wondering about that...does Watanuki know for sure that 'that person' is Yuuko?

*eats a Donut* I was thinking that if Watanuki doesn't understand Doumeki's strong feelings (whether love or close friendship) he is one dense kitty. XD
