(Two For the Road)
It is soon to end and thank god for that.
It would appear that 2009 was, collectively, a crap year all around the world. I suppose I should have realised it wasn't going to be good when it started with a war.
I don't know about you, but my 2009 included cancer, a war, homophobia and a death in the family. It also included a wedding and my first long-term relationship.
Not all was bad.
Just compounded with the bad stuff.
Maybe there will be more of this to come, in which case I don't know if I want to be involved in 2010.
Maybe it's the decade giving us a jolly fare-well and our Teens will see a better world.
It's been a hard year friends.
A decade I'm glad to see over.
Just before the end, The Arbeit Macht Frei sign was found. I didn't write about when it was stolen, because I had no doubt that it either never be found or would be found quickly.
Symbols are often deemed more important to find than actual perpetrators of crime.
There was outrage in Israel when the sign was stolen.
The shooter at the gay youth club hasn't been found yet, nor will he ever, I despair.
The POW/Hostage (depending who you talk to) Gilad Shalit has yet to be released along with the other Palestinian Political/Security (again, depends who you're referring to) which are used as a bargaining chip.
A piece of scrap metal bearing words in German was found and returned over the weekend.
The world fucking sucks.
Good morning.
Talk to y'all later.

Oh Mr. Fitzergerald, why are you not with us any more?
I knew I'd have problems with This Side of Paradise, but I didn't expect this many, nor that I cannot solve them by myself, no matter how hard I looked.
Therefore, oh almighty friends, I have come to seek your help.
1. "...he essayed a cigarette in his exaltation, and succumbed to a vulgar, plebeian reaction."
What does "a vulgar, plebeian reaction" mean? Coughing? Cursing? Bad image?
2. "...blood being thicker than broth, he was pulled through." (scarlet fever.)
What is the original idiom for the first half? Does it mean he's very healthy, or just lucky enough?
Thank you!
As a result of this disastrous attempt (which has just begun...), I have decided to pursue a literature degree. However, for now, I have no idea how to improve my pathetic literary appreciation ability, like, in 10 days. Any speedy DIY tips? >_<|||||

Unfortunately nobody entered the layout competition (I'm guessing because it's Christmas time and we're all busy) so I have installed a new layout - 'heroes are good in grey' by likefluffy. I hope you guys like it, I'm still working on little improvements so if you notice any problems with the layout please let me know.
Next year I will try to run another header layout competition, but until then you guys will have to put up with my non-existant Photoshop skills ;)
I think Avatar is gorgeous*. I don't actually know for sure because 3D is the most ridiculous fucked up thing I've ever seen, and I had to watch the whole movie out of focus.
What I do know is that it's insultingly hamfisted. I won't call the Na'vi noble savages, because they're better than that--they're a harmonious indigenous people with a rich culture. Which is just as bad a cliche these days. And for fuck's sake, stop basing alien cultures on non-European earth cultures. WE SEE WHAT YOU DO THERE! Everyone was straight out of central casting, humans and Na'vi, and the bad guys were so flat I could hardly muster any contempt for them. When you find yourself playing a caricature of Paul Reiser, you should stop and reevaluate your life. And the music, jeeze. Just play "Colors of the Wind" over the end credits and have done.
Mind you, in spite of all of this--no, let's face it, because of this--it was effective. I probably would have cried if my eyes hadn't been busy trying to put things in focus. I like Sam Worthington and Sigourney Weaver in just about anything, and I'm sure thousands of people will feel deeply for the plight of the harmonious aliens.
I, however, do not need my hand held to root for the non-humans. That is my default state. Candycoating it just pisses me off. Screw skin color--I'm sick of human saviors.
Despite that, I will be over here watching Aliens, because I need a xenomorph chaser something fierce.
(...okay, maybe Lance Henriksen and Jenette Goldstein make me warm to humanity just a little. At least for a couple of hours at a time.)

There are few picturebook-makers as cool as Dave McKean and Neil Gaiman, and their latest collaboration, Crazy Hair (Bloomsbury £11.99), for 3-6s, is wild. It’s about a father whose hair is so big it contains tigers, pirate ships and carousels. Distortions and magnifications make the images strange and dark, rivalling the text for energy and verve.
